Health and Wellness / Health Education

This unit will support the development of students’ knowledge, understanding and skills regarding providing and supporting the provision of health education to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals accessing healthcare services. It will develop students’ understanding of the factors that impact upon health and explore the methods used to identify health inequalities at a local level. Students will also enhance their understanding of the relationship between health beliefs and illness, enabling them to assess how health beliefs can influence communication between healthcare practitioners and service users. This unit will also provide an opportunity to discuss ways in which barriers to effective communication can be addressed and overcome. Theoretical models of health education utilised to bring about behaviour change will be examined, and students will be able to use one such model to implement a health education initiative. They will also develop an understanding of and be able to apply methods used to evaluate health education initiatives.
